Do you ever find yourself wishing for more time? It's a sentiment that resonates with many of us, and it's a topic that recently caught my attention after listening to Oliver Burkeman's discussing Time Management and the concept of "time credits."

In the early 1900s, life expectancy varied greatly depending on factors such as geography, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare. Globally, the average life expectancy was much lower than it is today, hovering around 47 to 50 years. This was largely due to higher rates of infant mortality, the prevalence of infectious diseases, and limited medical advancements.
Fast forward to the present day, and we find ourselves incredibly fortunate. Thanks to amazing advancements in modern medicine, many of us can expect to live significantly longer lives, with an average life expectancy of around 79 years for men and 83 years for women. When broken down, that's approximately 4,108 weeks for men and 4,316 weeks for women—nearly 1,872 weeks more than our ancestors had!

Yet, despite this gift of extended time, we still grapple with never-ending to-do lists, feelings of overwhelm, and a persistent habit of constantly living for the future. We say to ourselves, "I'll be happy when...," postponing our contentment to some future milestone.
But here's the truth staring us in the face: we can't do it all! Each of us have a finite amount of time on this earth. So, the question then becomes: how will we spend our time credits to make the most of this precious gift?
Some of us opt for time management techniques like time boxing and using apps to track every minute of our day. While these methods can be effective for some, they may not resonate with everyone. For many, they can even create more stress and stifle creativity rather than freeing up time.
What we must come to terms with is the reality of time. We need to take a long, hard look at what we truly want to achieve in this life and learn to spend our time credits wisely. This means learning to say "no" to tasks that don't align with our priorities and guarding our time fiercely.

Here are some strategies to consider:
1. Prioritise like a pro: Identify your long-term goals and values, and focus your time and energy on tasks that move you closer to achieving them.
2. Set boundaries: Learn to say "no" to tasks and commitments that don't serve your priorities. Guard your time as if it were your most valuable asset… because it is.
3. Embrace mindfulness: Take time to pause, reflect, and be present in the moment. Mindfulness practices can help us cultivate a greater awareness of how we're spending our time and whether it aligns with our values.
By implementing these strategies, we can begin to reclaim control over our time and live more intentionally. Remember, it's not about doing more, it's about doing what matters most.
Let's not forget to celebrate the gift of time we've been given and make the most of every moment.
Have a great day,
